Well note to replace sick note
A new system that is aimed at encouraging those with long-term sickness back to work has been welcomed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).
The Department for Work and Pensions has suggested that GPs provide advice and information on how employees can return to work following a mental health problem using a new 'well note' system.
Mike Emmott, CIPD employee relations adviser, remarked that GPs are "letting down" their patients by using the current method of long-term absence sick notes.
He said: "All the evidence shows that a phased return to work can play a beneficial role in the recovery of people suffering with this kind of illness.
"Work has a huge part to play in the early treatment and rehabilitation of people experiencing mental ill health."
Mr Emmott added that employers are willing to support the scheme but need more involvement and communication from GPs.
The CIPD recently suggested that strong job market figures could be the result of an influx of migrants and employment opportunities for workers over the age of 50.
